Kofa National Wildlife Refuge

The Kofa National Wildlife Refuge was first established in 1939. This refuge contains 665,400 acres of pristine desert environment. It is home to the unique desert bighorn sheep and also to the California fan palm. This is the only native palm in Arizona. Other wildlife species found in this area are the white-winged dove, desert tortoise, and desert kit fox.

We hiked "Palm Canyon Trail", it was very cool and windy (Feb 12, 2000) that day. The trial curved it's way between the mountain, as you can see with the bottom pic to your right. That photo is looking between the mountains from the parking area. We hiked all the way to its end. It was a great view, but the photos did not turn out so well. The palm trees here (bottom middle photo), grow in small groves on the face of the mountains. There are only about 100 of these palm trees left in the entire state of Arizona. By the way, we did not see any bighorn sheep.  Maybe next time.
